Faulty
bite, grinding teeth while you sleep, emotional stress, imbalance
of muscles of mastication (the muscles that enable you to chew)
often result in the dysfunction of the joint (TMJ) between the
temporal bone and the mandible (Jaw) resulting in pain, popping
or clicking of the TMJ. This affects approximately 40% of the
U.S. population, with a female to male ratio of 4-1.
Most people experience facial pain and headaches along with
their TMJ pain. Pain may increase later in the day because
of talking or chewing. One sided pain usually radiates to the
head, neck, eye or shoulders. It is important to differentiate
TMJ pain from other pains that may be caused by ear or sinus
infection, tooth pain, referred pain from neck or other parts
of the body.
Chiropractic treatment can help alleviate TMJ pain. Some times
we may need to refer you to the appropriate dental health care
professional. For example you may need braces to fix your bite,
need new dentures or bite plate while you sleep. You can continue
to have Chiropractic treatment to address the faulty joint
and the muscle imbalance.
Make an appointment today and have Dr. Youdeem check your
TMJ.
